Wideopenmag Gear Review: Trigger FF

The iXS Trigger FF helmet is a light-weight, downhill-rated full face helmet for all day riding without burning a hole in your pocket.

iXS have come out of the blocks with the Trigger FF helmet that seems to tick all the boxes. Joe has been finding out if it stacks up while out on the trail.

Key features:

  • New patented in-mould technology
  • External & internal ventilation channels
  • Goggle compatible adjustable visor
  • ErgoFit UltraTM system for horizontal and vertical adjustment
  • Fidlock magnetic closure
  • EN1078, CPSC, ASTM rated
  • 595g (SM 54-58cm) / 660g (ML 59-62cm)
  • £189.99 RRP
  • IXS.com

For most people full face helmets used to be reserved for full on downhill riding, but in recent years, and with some enduro races enforcing the use of full face helmets, lighter weight versions have come to the market, specifically designed to be worn on more trail/enduro focused rides.

The Trigger is iXS’ most recent addition to their range, and with some clever patented manufacturing technology, they have been able to create a downhill-certified helmet that is both lightweight and well ventilated.

The ErgoFit UltraTM system gives plenty of room for adjustment, and I was able to achieve fit that was comfortable and secure. I found it to be very well ventilated for a full-face helmet and would be more than happy to wear it all day for an enduro race.

At 595 grams for a size SM, it is significantly lighter than one of the benchmark full face DH helmets, the Troy Lee Designs D3 Carbon that weighs in at around 1100 grams, and under 200 grams more than the newly-released A3. With the light weight, combined with the great ventilation, I can see why it is likely to be a popular choice for riders who want the protection that a full-face helmet offers, but that is comfortable on long rides.

I think iXS have got the looks bang on too, with the large visor and chunky chin guard, it still looks like a proper full face. The visor has three angle settings, with the top position allowing goggle storage, which is a convenient way to store them as it keeps them out of the way of rear wheel spray. Another feature I really like is the Fidlock magnetic closure on the chinstrap as it is just so easy to use.

What do we think?

Coming in considerably less expensive and much lighter than many flagship downhill-rated helmets, while being comfortable and well-ventilated enough for all-day riding means that the iXS Trigger FF has hit the nail on the head.

It doesn’t even look like a dog’s dinner either.

We love:

  • Comfortable and secure
  • Light weight
  • Fidlock magnetic chin strap

Could do better:

  • Not much
